Comprehension, Linguistic Awareness, and Vocabulary in English and Spanish
With funding from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), researchers from Boston College (Proctor) and the University of Maryland (Silverman and Harring) are working to develop the CLAVES intervention - a small-group reading intervention for bilingual upper elementary students that focuses on teaching and using language as the a key lever to promote language development and reading comprehension. The foundation for this development and innovation project was established from 2009 - 2013 with IES funds to explore key longitudinal predictors of reading comprehension among monolingual and bilingual children in grades 2 - 5. See our information FLYER, and go to our website for more details.
Improving Comprehension Online (ICON)

This prototype was developed in a collaboration with the Center for Applied Special Technology, Boston College, Harvard University, and the Waltham, Peabody, and Boston Public Schools. The goal was to use a digital format for upper elementary school aged children with English and Spanish-English backgrounds to be able to access texts with support for vocabulary and comprehension development. See Dalton, Proctor, Uccelli, Mo, & Snow (2011) and Proctor, Dalton, Uccelli, Biancarosa, Mo, Snow, & Neugebauer (2011) for articles evaluating the effectiveness of ICON.
The ICON prototype is freely available for use. Click here, then choose a class, then a student (student1, student2, etc.). Password is the same as the student name (i.e., student1, student2, etc.)
